Grocery store granola is expensive and contains copious amounts of added sugars and seed oils.
Making your own granola is easy, affordable, and delicious! Plus, you can customize it to your family’s preferences.
Homemade Double Chocolate Granola- The Ingredients
- 3 cups rolled oats sprouted is best, it’s more easily digestible
- 1 ½ cups chopped nuts almonds, pecans, and/or peanuts are delicious
- ¼ cup shredded coconut unsweetened
- ¼ cup hemp hearts adds protein and a nutty flavour
- ¼ cup pumpkin seeds full of important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants like magnesium, zinc and iron
- 1 tsp sea salt additional source of minerals, enhances the sweet & chocolatey flavours
- ⅓ cup cacao/cocoa powder cocoa powder is more common, but cacao powder offers a more intense chocolate flavor. Cacao powder also boasts more antioxidants and minerals because it is less processed
- ¼ cup coconut (or avocado) oil healthy fat, additional source of antioxidants
- ½ cup maple syrup to taste! Real maple syrup is key, ditch the corn syrup imitations. You can use honey or agave if you prefer
- ½ cup chocolate chips or chunks optional
- 1 tsp espresso powder enhances the chocolate flavour
Tip: Want to make a bigger batch? Just multiply the recipe! This recipe easily scales up for a crowd.
The Perks of Going Homemade
- Save Money: This recipe is a fraction of the cost of store-bought granola.
- Control the Ingredients: You know exactly what goes into your granola. No mystery ingredients, artificial flavors, or corn syrup here!
- Customize It! Want it extra chocolaty? Add more chocolate chips! Prefer it less sweet? Use less maple syrup. Love walnuts? Use them as your chopped nuts.
Tips and Customization Ideas
If your nuts are salted, you may want to decrease the amount of salt you add.
You can use any combination of nuts you like. I usually add almonds, pecans and peanuts. A deluxe nut mix would also work great here.
Sprinkling the shredded coconut on top of your mixture allows it to toast as your granola bakes. Toasted coconut = heaven.
This recipe is incredibly customizable. You can omit the cacao powder for regular granola. You can add in other ingredients you love like cinnamon, chia seeds, or vanilla extract. You can adjust the amounts of anything to your liking. Have fun with it and find something your family loves!
