Milanesas are kind of like Argentina’s version of a tenderloin, but made with beef instead of pork. They’re delicious, super thin cuts of beef coated in breadcrumbs and baked until golden brown. Delicious served with mashed potatoes or a simple salad, you have to give Milanesas a try.
In Argentina, you can find these pre-breaded in many grocery stores. Unfortunately, in the US, we don’t have that luxury. You can buy peeled garlic and microwavable dinners, but sadly not pre-breaded milanesas. So, I bring to you this relatively quick and easy recipe to make milanesas in the comfort of your own home.
In Texas, you can easily find thinly sliced beef in your local grocery’s meat department. Often it’s even called ‘Milanesa’. I’ve also seen it called ‘wafer thin’. If you can’t find it near you, ask your butcher to slice round tip steak very thin, about 1/8″ to 1/4″ thick.
Why You’ll Love These Milanesas:
- Quick & Easy: Ready in just 30 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights.
- High Protein: An easy way to meet your protein goals, with meat as the focus of your meal. Add a fried egg (Milanesa a Caballo) for added protein.
- Healthy: These milanesas are baked rather than fried, making them healthier.
- Simple Ingredients: Made with everyday pantry staples.
- Versatile: Customize it with your favorite herbs, spices, and toppings.
Tips & Variations:
- Milanesa Napolitana: Top the cooked milanesa with tomato sauce, ham and mozzarella cheese before baking for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Milanesa a Caballo: Prepare a fried egg and place it on top of the cooked milanesa.
- Suprema: Milanesas made with thin cuts of chicken rather than beef.
To make these, prepare two plates and a shallow bowl. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Preheat the oven to 375.
In one plate, sprinkle flour and onion salt. In the other plate, pour breadcrumbs. In the bowl, whisk together egg, milk, and pepper.
Dredge meat through flour, then egg mixture, then breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs in to ensure they are well adhered. Place the milanesa on the parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining beef cutlets.
Spray the cutlets with olive or avocado oil. Place in preheated oven on the middle rack for 10 minutes, or until the bottoms are golden brown. Flip and bake for 10 additional minutes. Serve fresh from the oven with lemon wedges and a glass of red wine.
Ready in just 30 minutes and consisting of only a few simple ingredients, they’re a lifesaver for busy weeknights. Serve them with a simple salad, mashed potatoes, or french fries for a true Argentine experience. Give them a try and let me know what you think in the comments below!
