Pizza de Palmitos. A strange combination that yields a surprisingly delicious result.

Salsa golf, or salsa rosada is an Argentine condiment akin to many burger places’ “special sauce” in the US. It’s essentially mayonnaise mixed with ketchup. Alone it’s nothing to write home about, although admittedly I’m not the biggest condiment fan. But drizzled over pizza with hearts of palm? Out of this world.
Argentinians are weird with their pizza. Hard boiled eggs, deli ham covering the entire pie, mayonnaise mixed with ketchup. The Italians brought a lot of their culture to Argentina, but pizza seems to have slipped through the cracks. If you visit Argentina, pizza should be low on your list of things to try. With the exception of Pizza de Palmitos.
You have to try it. Cheesy, hearty, and slightly tangy. It’s one of my all time favourite pizza combinations.
Why You’ll Love This Pizza de Palmitos
- Quick & Easy: Ready in just 20 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights.
- Hearty & Delicious: This makes for a hearty dinner with protein, carbs and veggies.
- Simple Ingredients: Made with a short list of simple ingredients.
- Versatile: Customize it with your favorite herbs. Experiment with other toppings like ham or olives.
Tips for Success
- Don’t skip preheating your oven to 500. The reason takeout pizza is so yummy is it’s cooked in high heat pizza ovens. To achieve this at home, you need to let your oven get as hot as possible.
- Get a pizza stone or use cast iron. These retain heat so much better than aluminum or other types of pizza pans.
- Preheat your pizza stone/cast iron pan. Place your pizza pan in the oven before preheating, so that both your oven and pan can get nice and hot.
- Make your own pizza dough. If time allows, make your own pizza dough. It tastes so much better. I love Vito Lacopelli’s recipe.
Ditch the delivery menus and make this Pizza de Palmitos. It’s an Argentine classic that’s sure to become a family favorite. If you’d like to try other authentic Argentine food, try milanesa!
